When Mortiis first released "The Smell of Rain" in 2001, the exceptionally diverse Norwegian artist delivered a milestone album that defied all expectations set by his earlier career as the defacto founder of "Dungeon Synth".
"The Smell of Rain" is now widely considered to be a timeless album which created its own hybrid of genres. Heavily inspired by industrial and electronic acts of the 80s and 90s, "The Smell of Rain" pioneered a new sound by blending in the grit, darkness, and theatrics of the era's gothic culture.
In essence, the album was a dark lab experiment that worked perfectly on its own terms.
